[05:42:36] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[05:42:38] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> I start to get allergic shocks just by having to deal with rust.. :-)
[05:42:54] <abaumann> thePiGrepper: did you try https://aur.archlinux.org
[05:42:56] <phrik> Title: AUR (en) - firefox-wayland (at aur.archlinux.org)
[05:43:40] <abaumann> As for any deviation from upstream Archlinux, the answer is no. If you want firefox upstream to be enabled with Wayland, ask there. Then we will gladly take it into Archlinux32. :-)
[05:44:10] <abaumann> Another question, why is firefox no enabled with Wayland per default? Might be, it doesn't work quite as expected..

[12:22:08] <thePiGrepper> deep42thought: another thing. that last commit in the asp32 repo, changing pentium3 to pentium4. was it my mistake when changing that line or something else changed lately? just curious
[12:24:03] <deep42thought> thePiGrepper: yeah, my net connection at home is still down
[12:24:36] <deep42thought> we changed lately to name it pentium4 because we noticed, several pentiumIII lack sse2
[12:31:53] <thePiGrepper> ohh, I see. that one you host from your own place. I didnt know that.
[12:32:09] <deep42thought> yeah, that was my personal backup on my bananapi
[12:32:14] <deep42thought> well, it still is
[12:32:18] <deep42thought> it's just offline now :-D
[12:32:27] <thePiGrepper> I see, so that change is an overall one. I get it know.
[12:32:33] <deep42thought> yeah
[12:33:44] <thePiGrepper> regarding the Ithink 4 issues, which might be just 3 actually, pending on asp32. Ill try to do the autocomplete soon, but the others probably will take a while. I've been kinda busy lately
[12:33:57] <thePiGrepper> sorry :-(
[12:34:00] <deep42thought> np
[12:34:26] <deep42thought> what you've done so far is also quite valuable :-D
[12:35:10] <thePiGrepper> oh, the PKGBUILD I think it's done though, the one depending on the git repo with signed tags. Ill send a pull request to packages when I have some time
[12:36:04] <thePiGrepper> deep42thought: haha, well I really wanted that functionality done so, you know how FOSS works. might just do it myself lol
[12:36:20] <deep42thought> that's the usual way, yeah :-D
[12:37:50] <thePiGrepper> one thing I wanted to discuss with you for a while, I think I might have mentioned it a while ago, was the idea of creating a new build targetting those 2009-2012 Atom-based netbooks which Im sure there's quite a big number of linux32 users there
[12:38:25] <deep42thought> what is to be changed about for those?
[12:38:27] <thePiGrepper> what do you think? myself included ofc. there are so many compiler flags that you can turn on with these machines comparing to just i686
[12:38:38] <thePiGrepper> sse up to 3
[12:39:04] <thePiGrepper> the tuning would change because atom processors have a different architecture
[12:39:20] <deep42thought> do I see it right, that this stuff was never optimized for in archlinux upstream?
[12:39:23] <thePiGrepper> there's a performance percentage to be gained
[12:40:20] <thePiGrepper> correct. in the sense that upstream had 2 builds, x64 and i686. the issue is that these netbooks are kinda in the middle
[12:40:48] <thePiGrepper> most of them are 32bit-only systems that have several x64 features
[12:41:17] <deep42thought> if there are enough users and enough gain, we could do it
[12:41:29] <thePiGrepper> some are even x64 CPUs but the manufacturers block part of the instruction set so that executing 64bit OSes wouldnt work
[12:41:48] -!- oaken-source has joined #archlinux32
[12:41:57] <thePiGrepper> so they have gotten the short end of the stick just because of bad timing I guess
[12:42:44] <deep42thought> can you compile a list of features / compilation flags from https://bbs.archlinux32.org which would target most users?
[12:42:46] <deep42thought> afk, lunch
[12:42:46] <phrik> Title: Survey: On what cpu do you (want to) use archlinux32? / Installation / Arch Linux 32 Forums (at bbs.archlinux32.org)
[13:03:01] <thePiGrepper> well, just took a look at the thread, and indeed several ppl have n270 netbooks which are the common denominator between all the atom cpus of that era. fortunately Im writing in one such netbook, so I just run 'gcc -c -Q -march=native --help=target' and found most of the recommended flags for it and the others
[13:04:33] <thePiGrepper> once I rediscover the command to pipe my output to one of those pastebin clones I'll send the link..

[13:44:52] <deep42thought> !give thePiGrepper ptpb
[13:44:54] <phrik> thePiGrepper: dead. https://github.com
[13:45:03] <deep42thought> huh?
[13:45:07] <deep42thought> I didn't know that
[15:12:05] <thePiGrepper> deep42thought: what part?
[15:12:12] <deep42thought> that ptpb was dead
[15:12:17] <thePiGrepper> wow, ptpb died? and now what
[15:12:22] <thePiGrepper> that's so sad
[15:12:41] <thePiGrepper> that service was magically simple
[15:13:33] <thePiGrepper> how did the bot knew but you didnt?
[15:13:44] <thePiGrepper> I thought those things were setup by the user
[15:14:07] <deep42thought> they're set up by users
[15:14:14] <deep42thought> but not necessarily by me ;-P
[15:14:22] <deep42thought> e.g. someone else knew
[15:14:34] <thePiGrepper> ohh

[20:27:14] <slacka123> thanks everyone for keeping Arch alive on older x86 hardware!
[20:29:16] <slacka123> I'm stoked to get ARch back on my netbook. Going from official Arch i686 to Arch 32 i686, I noticed that the UI is now laggy/sluggish under heavy CPU load
[20:31:21] <slacka123> Does Arch 32 use the same kernel scheduler? Do they use the same optimizations? All release builds (not debug)? Any ideas why GNOME/x11 is so unresopsive when I'm building software?
[20:42:16] <bill-auger> i would not expect gnome to perform very well on older computers - efficiency is not very high on their design goals
[20:46:22] <bill-auger> on my celeron 2600, gnome inside a VM was barely usable

[20:47:03] <slacka123> it's a memory hog and never been snappy. But something is very diffent now. After going from Arch -> Fedora 25-28 -> Arch 32, only ARch 32 has this .1-2 seconglag under high CPU
[20:47:32] <bill-auger> just my observation - gnome is for casual desktop users with relatively new PCs - it is not ideal for power users
[20:47:42] <slacka123> It's a decent CPU 2Ghz intel Core w/ 2gb of ram
[20:48:31] <bill-auger> try different kernels if you want
[20:48:57] <bill-auger> the LTS kernel for sure
[20:49:05] <slacka123> not disagreeing, but something seems to be configured different on Arch 32. Feels like a kernel issue. Just not sure where to begin
[20:49:29] <bill-auger> where to begin is "try different kernels" and see of they behave the same
[20:50:09] <bill-auger> also keep in mind the spectre/melpdown mitigations they say take a 2-30% performance hit
[20:50:17] <bill-auger> 20-30%
[20:50:39] <bill-auger> so if you have not upgraded your kernel in over a year, that could be the difference youre seeing
[20:50:51] <buildmaster> i686/ffmpeg is broken (says buildknecht).
[20:50:53] <slacka123> Yeah, that's a good idea
[20:51:24] <slacka123> I can try disabling all of those next reboot
[20:53:07] <slacka123> And that 30% is offen IO and network workload. compiling is IO intenisve. Old cpu so I doubt it, but will try

[21:01:58] <slacka123> It's been a year since Arch, but last kernel was 4.17.100 Fedora which had spectre/meltdown mit enabled
[21:02:36] <slacka123> I think you're right, I'll try the LTS kernel + disabling mitigations
[21:38:05] <buildmaster> i686/git-lfs are broken (says buildknecht).
